Fascial Structural Assessment

What is Fascia?

The fascial system covers the entire body like a connective web. It surrounds and interweaves between all organs, muscles, bones and nerve fibers giving the body a functional structure that allows all body systems to operate in an integrated manner.  It’s the largest sensory organ in your body with 250 million sensory receptors and it plays a roll with your immune system, neurological well-being, and how you sense and feel the world around you. There are 12 fascial lines in our body. These lines wrap around muscles, separate muscle fibers, and muscles from bones as well as connect them. Every single muscle is wrapped in fascia and each bundle of fascia is connected to another bundle of fascia, which means that everything is connected in the human body, not separate parts.

“It’s not about the stuff in the body, it’s the pattern.” Tom Myers @Anatomy Trains

What is Body Reading?

Body Reading is a visual assessment tool of structural analysis for identifying and resolving body-wide patterns of compensation. You look beyond the muscles and assess how the fascial lines influence relationships with posture, skeletal geometry, patterns and spaces throughout the body. Utilizing Thomas Myers’ model of myofascial lines (mapping layers of connective tissue) you look at the body as a system, not parts. The goal of these body reading assessments is to understand the pattern so you can create fascial tensegrity, develop resilience and stability throughout your body.

What is Structural Integration?
Structural Integration is a form of bodywork that was developed by Dr. Ida P. Rolf. It is based on the idea that the connective tissues of the body are responsible for maintaining its structure, movement patterns and communicating sensory information throughout the body. These interconnections can be called fascial lines and can be followed by the body’s dissectible meridians of connective tissue structures. Fascia creates a flexible framework that compartmentalizes, separates and connects everything in the body. Connective tissue can only do its job when it has an adequate amount of fluid. Repetition of daily living can cause connective tissue to become dehydrated, stiff, and tight causing compression and friction. Connective tissue dehydration is the underlying cause of strains, pains, stiffness and muscle tightness in the body. Dehydration makes fascial tissue less supportive, responsive and adaptable. The connective tissue system is responsible for misalignment, imbalances, chronic pain and discomfort in the body. When you restore the fluid state of connective tissue all your joints benefit, your muscles relax and your body becomes more efficient.

Structural Integration aims to address these issues by loosening and realigning the connective tissues. This can help to restore balance and symmetry to the body, improve movement, and reduce pain.

What's included in a Structural Integration Session?
Structural Integration Fascial Body Reading incorporates looking at postural patterns, relational anatomy, skeletal geometry and facial lines to assess the body as a whole, not as parts. Looking at fascial lines, movement patterns and structural alignment to release tension and restoring balance. When you restore the fluid state of connective tissue all your joints benefit, your muscles relax and your body becomes more efficient. Sessions usually begin with some deep breathing exercises to help you relax and get in touch with your body. You will then be asked to move through a series of poses, which will help us assess your body and identify any areas that need attention. After Structural Integration sessions, you can expect improved posture, increased mobility, and greater strength.
What are the benefits of a Structural Integration Session?
Anyone can benefit from Structural Integration, but it is particularly beneficial for those who have pain or dysfunction in their body. It can help to restore balance and symmetry to the body, improve movement, and reduce pain. Most people report a feeling of increased energy, improved posture, and a sense of being more in tune with their bodies. In addition, many people experience relief from chronic pain and tension. Some people even find that they can breathe more deeply and that they have better overall circulation. As with any type of therapy, the results will vary from person to person. However, if you are looking for a way to improve your overall well-being, Structural Integration may be just what you need.
