Vagus Nerve & Visceral Organ Reset Sessions

The vagus nerve is the most important nerve in the body. The vagus nerve is the longest and most complex of the 12 pairs of cranial nerves that emanate from the brain to the body. The name “vagus” comes from the Latin term for “wandering.” This is because the vagus nerve wanders from the brain into organs in the neck, chest, and abdomen. It transmits information from the surface of the brain to tissues and organs in the body. The vagus nerve functions contribute to the autonomic nervous system, which consists of the parasympathetic and sympathetic parts. The sympathetic side increases alertness, energy, blood pressure, heart rate, and breathing rate. The parasympathetic side, which the vagus nerve is heavily involved in, decreases alertness, blood pressure, and heart rate, and helps with calmness, relaxation, and digestion. We can consciously influence the structures it innervates- both its motor (efferent) and sensory (afferent) functions. It plays a major role in regulating the heart rate and keeping the gastrointestinal tract in working order. The vagus nerve also carries sensory information from the internal organs back to the brain.

The four key functions of the vagus nerve are:

  • Sensory: From the throat, heart, lungs, and abdomen.
  • Special sensory: Provides taste sensation behind the tongue.
  • Motor: Provides movement functions for the muscles in the neck responsible for swallowing and speech.
